Yulia’s Story: Standing Up To Abuse

Yulia came to HOME in October 2018 from another shelter, where she had been previously staying. She came to us as she was assisting police in investigations against her first employers, for physical abuse.

Yulia was meant to start work for a new employer while her police investigations were ongoing, but as a result of the trauma that she faced, she felt that she could not continue with live-in domestic work with another employer.

We provided Yulia with shelter, counselling, and casework support. Gradually, she came out of her shell and provided support to other residents who were undergoing circumstances similar to hers.

Eventually, she was repatriated in August 2020, after providing the authorities with evidence on her employer's crimes. Throughout this time, Yulia displayed bravery and resilience.
