National Day Weekend
14 August 2019
We hope that you had an eventful long weekend break, because for us here at HOME we sure had a fruitful one!
On National Day, Wild Rice invited HOME migrant domestic workers for their show 'Supervision' , which navigated questions of supporting an ageing population in Singapore, maintaining the right to privacy of domestic workers and caring for loved ones. Indeed, the performance was meaningful and poignant for all in the audience.
In addition, Bhing Navato and Kina Hidayah Kastari, two long-time HOME helpdesk volunteers, participated in the Open Borders: Stories Have No Boundaries event at the Esplanade Concourse on 11 August 2019. One of the most touching moments of the event was when Bhing shared the first time she went home after working in Singapore for 6 years. The following details part of her story (“SECOND”), when Bhing met her daughter after being apart for 6 years:
“Are you my mama?” I was taken a back, looking at her, tears just [flowing down] my cheeks. I realised she hadn’t seen me for 6 years. I had left her when she was 2 years old.
“Yes, I am.” I tried, with a smile.
Kina shared her story "28 days", which covers her experience working in Singapore when she met a foreign domestic worker whose employer was unkind to her – providing insufficient food and not allowing her to talk to anyone.
You can find out more about the Wild Rice’s ‘Supervision’ here, it’s showing till 18 August 2019.
